Delicate creature that it is, Pinot noir is more susceptible to mother nature than other grape varieties. According to my meticulous diary, vintage ‘21 had to contend with some erratic conditions - 4 frosts in October followed by a cool November with more rain than average. Plus a period of howling gales in December. Then, typical Wairarapa, the first sign of drought.
Heroically this all turned out fine with sugar levels averaging 23.4 brix - much higher & the eventual alcohol level runs the risk of disturbing our Transport authorities. So, picking took place on 24th March. The result is a garnet coloured Pizzicato with the usual dark cherry aroma modified by some mild French oak (vanilla/coconut) characters. Lovely round texture with some savoury notes for which Martinborough is widely known. Will continue to reward careful cellaring. Pizzicato goes with pork, mushrooms & dense fish - tuna & salmon - in the same way as Rachel used to go with Rod.
